Cox Surveys Consumers

Cox Business, the enterprise department of Cox Cable and Internet recently conducted a survey on consumers shopping and dining habits. What they found isn't that surprising. People like to shop at places that agree with their beliefs.

Some interesting tidbits: while 71% said it was important for businesses they go to "practice diverse and inclusive hiring," less that a third felt it was "significantly meaningful" to support women-owned businesses.

Although the questions were probably phrased differently, over 40% of the respondents felt free high-speed wifi Internet, like Cox provides, was important.

Of course the results were probably framed in a way to promote technology like having high-speed Internet and connected devices. Cox Business Executive Vice President Steve Rowley said "small brick-and-mortar businesses have to rely on technology in order to deliver great shopping and dining experiences that keep consumers coming back."

In addition to business services, Cox Communications provides high-speed Internet, video and smart home services on the residential side too.

Cox Cable Testifies for the Government Against AT&T

Cable TV and Internet provider, Cox Cable, the country's fifth largest cable company is naturally leery of Phone, Internet and video giant AT&T gaining even more strength. AT&T is tryinmg to buy Time Warner and the US Department of Justice is suing to stop it. They have called Cox Communications acquisitions manager Suzanne Fenwick as their first witness to testify about how the $85 billion merger of AT&T and TIme Warner would negatively affect Cox Communmications and other cable and Internet companies.

There has been some discussion of the possibility that President Trump's bickering with Time Wanrer owned CNN may be affecting the opposition of the DoJ to the AT&T/Time Warner.

Attending the first day of the trial was DoJ anti-trust divisiion head Makan Delrahim, AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson, Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes as well as Cox's Fenwick.

The DoJ contends that AT&T could, through Time Warner ownership, withhold HBO, CNN content from rivals — or make it too expensive. This would drive up competitor's prices thereby making the whole industry less competitive. Customers would likely go to AT&T's DirecTV, if the other video providers didn't have the same choices in programming.

Fenwick said as a video provider, Cox Cable might be forced to agree to a deal with “egregious fees,” to get Time Warner content.

Cox Communications provides Cable TV as well as Internet to several locations around the country. AT&T provides phone service, Internet and video through U-verse TV and DircTV satellite service.

Cox Stations Blocked on Frontier

Even though Cox Enterprises, through Cox Communications, provides Internet, Cable TV and phone service, they also own television stations. They own some NBC, ABC, CBS, Fox affiliate stations and some independent stations across the United States through Cox Media Group.

Carriage disputes are when a cable company is reluctant to pay the price that a television station is charging for the right to show the station on a certain cable or satellite network. This is one of the arguments put forth by the Trump administration as an objection to the AT&T Time Warner merger. The Department of Justice is claiming that the merger of AT&T and Time Warner could give AT&T an unfair advantage in carriage agreements since they would own a bunch of channels like HBO, CNN, TCM, TNT, Cartoon Network, Turner Broadcasting, plus Warner Brothers Studios which owns DC Comics. Think Batman and Superman.

Another example of this is Cox Enterprises, who owns Cox Media Group and therefore some TV stations. They also own Cox Communications, a cable and Internet company. Cox Media Group is withholding some of their local stations from Frontier Communications in some areas due to pricing disagreements. So if you have Frontier Internet and video service in some areas you might not be able to watch some Cox Media Group stations.
